Why is the Mona Lisa so famous?

A lot of the popularity is from two aspects: 1) the fact that it was painted by da Vinci, who is a very famous renaissance man, and 2) the fact that no one really know who the mona lisa is. Many believe that it is the female version of da Vinci himself, and he painted it as a female self portrait.
