A movement launched in Paris by A. Breton based on searching for things beyond realism. Surrealistic art deals with the subject of the subconsious mind. There is often a dreamlike quality to the art with strange juxtapositions & compositions but usually rendered in realistic detail. It was largely based on Freudian theory & a reaction to WW1. The art was meant to provoke disconcerting feeling in the viewer.
