Why is the corona hotter than the photosphere?

seriously, why the heck is the outer atmosphere (corona) of the sun hotter than the surface (photosphere) itself? isn't the outer atmosphere just heat that radiates from the surface? and the surface is closer to the core than the corona is, right? so why is the corona hotter? i'm dying of curiosity...
